جمع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب ذخيرة ثرّة من الأحاديث والآثار المتعلقة بالعلم والعمل، وبكل ناحية من نواحي الحياة. وقد قام المحقق بضبط النص على نسخ معتمدة ذكرها ضمن الكتاب، خرّج الآيات القرآنية والأحاديث وعزاها إلى مصادرها، مع مقابلتها على أصولها وشرح غريب الألفاظ وضبطها إلى جانب الأعلام والبلدان. عنون بعض الأبواب المُغفلة، أضاف أجوبة الحافظ ابن حجر العسقلاني عن أحاديث "المصابيح" آخر الكتاب، وألحق في بعضها الأحاديث التي لم يذكرها العلائي وابن حجر.
