هذا الكتاب محصّلة لعقد كامل من التفاعل مع حقبة ربما هي الأهمّ في تاريخ العراق. فسقوط ضدام حسين واحتلال العراق كان زلزالاً، أعاد العراق والمنطقة، إلى مرحلة ما قبل الاستقلال وأعاد طرح الأسئلة الكبرى حول طبيعة الكيان السياسي العراقي، وعلاقة الدولة بالمجتمع والعلاقات بين مكنوناته، ومعنى الهوية الوطنية.
لقد وجدنا أنفسنا في مواجهة خطابين وموقفين، واحد يدعو إلى مقاومة الاحتلال وتأجيل بحث أي قضية أخرى، والآخر يدعو إلى بناء الذات ومراجعة تجربة بناء الدولة الوطنية العراقية ومآلاتها بهدف الشروع بتغيير جذري في بنية هذه الدولة.
بالنتيجة لم يصل أيّ من الطرفين إلى نتيجة لصالح العراق، وها نحن اليوم أمام عراق في أشدّ حالاته تعصّباً وانقساماً. وتعود الحرب الأهلية، ونرى البلد مهدد بوحدته أكثر من أيّ وقت مضى في تاريخه والصراع يتكشّف عن عنف دمويّ غير مسبوق، وتنطلق الغزائر لتغطّي على لغة العقل والتبصر.
هذا التحدّي الكبير، هو بالضبط ما يدفعني إلى نشر هذا الكتاب الذي أقدّم فيه مراجعات لتجربة ما بعد سقوط صدام آملاً أن يكون وثيقة تتناول أخطر المراحل التي مرّ بها العراق، وأن يسهم في طرح نقاش حول كيفية انتشال ما تبقّى لهذا البلد من الوضع الصعب الذي يعيشه.
