ينسب المناخ إلى الجغرافيا الطبيعية، وتعد جغرافية المناخ أحد أفرعها التي تعنى به، وهو أحد الموضوعات الرئيسية في لائحة المقررات الدراسية بأقسام الجغرافيا على مستوى العالم، والمناخ علم طبيعي، تطبيقي، إحصائي، يحتاج في تفسيره إلى وسائل تعليمية ومعملية وآلية متعددة، ويحتاج دارس المناخ أن يكون ملمًا بقوانين الرياضيات والفيزياء والإحصاء، ولديه الخبرة الكافية في إنشاء الرسوم والأشكال البيانية والخرائط.
وتتحدد وظيفة هذا الكتاب في تحقيق هدفين أساسيين: الأول، هو إعداد قارئه الإعداد المناسب لفهم منظومة الغلاف الجوي من خلال تناول عناصر المناخ المختلفة من حيث النشأة والوظيفة والعوامل المؤثرة فيها على المستويين الأفقي والرأسي، والتوزيع الجغرافي لها، وتقسيم العالم إلى أقاليم مناخية، وتحليل أسباب اختلاف المناخ بكل إقليم، وهو ما تتناوله موضوعات الجزء الأول من الكتاب. أما الهدف الثاني، هو التحذير من الأخطار التي تواجه بيئتنا (سطح الأرض) بسبب تغير المناخ وتحديد طرق مقاومة تلك الأخطار من خلال عرض مجموعة من المشكلات البيئية التي تسببت فيها الانحرافات المناخية وهو ما تتناوله موضوعات الجزء الثاني من الكتاب.
ولقد حاولنا أن يكون أسلوب معالجة موضوعات الكتاب أبسط ما يكون حتى يسهل على القارئ كان طالبًا جامعيًا، أو طالب علم عادي تتبع موضوعات الكتاب دون حيرة أو شتات.
