الكتاب هو دراسة للذات العربية على ضوء تحليلات نفسية واجتماعية وذلك بواسطة الوصافة الشاملة والميدانية لقرية محددة. في هذه الدراسة يأخذ الباحث الذات العربية زبوناً في أزمة هي أزمة هوية تولدت من معقود أوضاع من مساع حول الخروج من السبات والدخول إلى اليقظة ودنيا الإيجاد، والحب للمجتمع والثقة بالآخرين، وهي أزمة الانتقال من "اللاوعي" والغريزة، والظلام، واللامحدود إلى الوعي، والعقل والنور، والوضوح في الهدف والتوجه، وهي أزمة الانسلاخ من عالم الطفل، ودنيا القيود والقمع، ومن العملي، والإكتفائي، للدخول في عالم الراشد، والأنا المعقلي، والمناطق المحرمة، والمعرفة الأقدر، والاستقرار الذي يتجاوز التقلبات والقلق والعلائق الاجتماعية الضاغطة والمكبلة، وقد بين الباحث أنها، بالفعل، أزمة حتمية الوقوع، تاريخية ضرورية. ثم، وهذا هو الوجه الثاني المهم، هي نافعة وبناءة، توقظ وعي الأنا بالأنا، وتفرض الوعي بالمشكلة وشتى الحواجز، وتلك الأزمة، أيضاً، تسبق المولد الثاني للإنسان العربي، مولده النفسي، وانتقاله إلى عالم الكبار، وتبنيه الداعي لشخصيته المستقلة إزاء الآخرين وهجرته من الأنا الطفلية والمراهقية إلى أنا جديدة حيث المسؤولية والحرية ومشاعر الاستقلالية والمبالغة في تمييز الذات عن الآخرين وفي طلب العدالة والمساواة، تجاوزت وفرة وعمقاً كل المتغيرات التي عرفتها خلال قرون مديدة، والوعي بتلك الأزمة، وبالإنجاح الحضاري حيث الاغتراب عن عالم الصناعة وما لحقتها، هو تشخيص للأوضاع ومن ثمت نشدان للمعافاة في حقل عالمي لا يوفر لنا الصحة ولا مع تلك الصحة شعوراً بالرضى، إن تصفيه تلك الأزمة، وذلك التعثر في تحديد الهوية والتوجه والإجابات، ضرورة: لقد طالت فترة المرض.
