منذ إكتشاف الباحث جوزف شاخت مخطوط "كتاب التوحيد" للإمام أبي منصور الماتريديّ (+944) في السنة 1950، وقيام دار المشرق في بيروت بنشر هذا المخطوط في سلسلة "بحوث ودراسات" الجامعيّة، في سلسلة "بحوث ودراسات" الجامعيّة، توالت الدراسات الأكاديميّة شرقاً وغرباً عن مؤسّس المدرسة الحنفيّة الماتريديّة في علم الكلام، والفقه، وتفسير القرآن الكريم.
ويأتي هذا الكتاب، وهو ثمرة أعوام من البحث الجامعيّ، ليلقي الضوء على قضيَّة أساسيَّة تعرض لها عقيدة الماتريديّ في مجمل صفحات "كتاب التوحيد"، ألا وهي إشكاليّة أصل العالم، وبالتالي حريَّة الله تعالى وقدرته المطلقة على الإيجاد، في مقابل إستطاعة الإنسان ومسؤوليته.
إنها قضيَّة حاليَّة معاصرة ما زالت تشغل الفكر البشريّ منذ أجيال، وموقف الماتريديّ المؤكِّد قدرة الله تعالى على التكوين من لا شيء، يأتي في سياق جدالٍ ذي طابع عقلاني مع الكثير من التيّارات الفلسفيَّة والملل الدينيَّة والنِحَل الإسلاميَّة التي كانت منتشرة في مدينة سمرقند، وفي بلاد ما وراء النهر، والتي كانت تنكر عقيدة الخلق وبالتالي قدرة الله المطلقة.
وقد قام الباحث يعرض محتوى مواقف هذه الفرق، كما وردت في "كتاب التوحيد" وردّ الإمام عليها، كما أنّه استخرج البراهين والنقاط والمصطلحات التي اعتمدها الماتريديّ في هذا المجال.
ويسبق هذا الجزء من الكتاب عرضٌ لموقع الماتريديّ في تاريخ علم الكلام حيال الإعتزال والأشعريَّة، وتلك القواعد والأسس العقلانيّة والبرهانيّة والمنطقيّة التي انتهجها الماتريديّ في تصريف عقيدته.
