تثاءب بشدة ثم طوح يديه في فضائه المحيط قبل أن يعيدهما ببطء. قادم الأستاذ جميل موظف السجل المدني أخيراً من كرسيه يتحرك ناحية مفتاح النور ليغلقه. حاولت امرأة عجوز أن تدركه برجاء فيه إلحاح فلم يلتفت إليها وهو يغلق الباب. "غدآ" قالها مع جهد كبير، ولم يحاول حتى أن ينظر إليها.
في الطريق حاول أحد المتسولين استيقافه ولم يفلح. ألح عليه وهو يهرول وراءه قبل أن يتوقف فجأة ويستدير نحو المتسول ثم يمد يداً جسورة نحو جيب جلباب المتسول الذي بوغت بالرجل يقبض على كل جيبه بما حوى "أعطني أنت شيئاً من هذا الكثير". "كله كلام فارغ يا بيه والله ما يأكلوني أنا وعيالي". قالها الرجل قبل أن يجذب جلبابه وينطلق مسرعاً بعيداً عنه.
في موقف الباصات استطاع أن يتقدم الجمع المهرول خلف الحافة. استخدم ذرعيه القويتين الممسكتين بجانبي الباب الأمامي للحافلة بقوة، ليحتجز من هم وراءه حتى يستقر داخل الحافلة. استطاع بهذه المناورة الوصول أولاً للمقعد الوحيد غير المشغول على ظهر الحافلة المحتشدة اللآن. وهو يهيئ لظهره متكأه لمح أحد اللصوص يستل حافظة أحدهم بالقرب من الباب قبل أن يقفز سريعاً خارج الحافلة التي تحركت بالفعل مما جعل النشال يسقط على ظهره.
شاهد السائق واقعة السقوط فتوقف بفرملة سريعة قبل ولوج الساقط تحت العجلات. اندفع الواقفون بسرعة في اتجاه أمامي متلاحمين نتيجة التوقف المفآجئ. تابع المشهد من النافذة مبتسماً وهو يرى الضحية مع آخرين يأخذون بيد السارق يقيمونه ويواسونه ببعض الكلمات دون أن يدروا أنه لص.
