حكاية "الثعلب أشعب" تحمل في ثناياها كل مقومات الفن القصصي المحلي في البقاع في مداها القريب، ولبنان وسوريا وفلسطين في المدى الأوسع. لكنها أعمق جذوراً إذ تستحضر التراث العربي والفارسي القديم. ومع ذلك لا يمكن اعتبارها كنص كامل وأصلي أنها الحكاية المروية نفسها، إذ إن فن القص بما يتخلله من لوازم تتكرر، ونبرات صوت يختلف تماماً عن فن الكتابة، علماً أن جهداً جرى للحفاظ على البناء الحكائي القديم بمفاتيحه الأساسية. هذا إلى جانب أن ما أعادت بناءه الذاكرة يختلف إلى حد ما عما قيل لدى روايتها .
وهذه الحكاية تتركز على شخصية رئيسية هي الثعلب أشعب، الذي يملك مقاليد فن السرد والحركة والسياق عامة وإدارة ما يحدث من وقائع، لصالح نهمه إلى الطعام وأطماعه وجشعه، وهو يمتاز عن باقي الشخصيات التي تحضر في النص بميزات كبرى تجعله قادراً على تلبس العديد من الأدوار دون سواه، فهو الناسك والخياط ومعلم المدرسة والطبيب المغربي والتاجر والطافر للنجاة بجلده في البراري والصحاري، لكنه رغم هذه التحولات، يظل المحتال بامتياز للحصول على طعامه بأسهل السبل وأيسرها، ودون أن يكلف نفسه عناء الصيد والقنص. والملفت أنه ينتصر في النهاية، بالنظر إلى أن الدهاء والحنكة يتغلبان على قوة بطش الذئب، الذي يقع في مكائده التي تنتهي بموت الأخير كمداً، بعد أن خسر زعامته وكرامته وعنفوانه أمام حيوان قمّام صعلوك.
