عندما تمت كتابة التاريخ المصري منذ حوالي قرنين، لم يكن هذا التاريخ يحتوي على مكان لواحد من أهم العصور في بلادنا، وهو العصر القبطي. ربما كان سبب غياب هذا العصر من تاريخنا المكتوب، يرجع إلى اعتقاد الباحثين الخاطئ بأن المصريين لم يعتنقوا المسيحية قبل الحكم البيزنطي في القرن الرابع. وبينما يوافق الكثيرون منهم على أن القديس مرقص هو الذي أسس كنيسة الإسكندرية، فهم ينظرون إلى هذه المدينة وكنيستها باعتبارها يونانية وليست مصرية.
الآن بعد مرور حوالي قرن ونصف القرن على بدء أعمال الكشف الأثري في بلادنا، أصبح من الضروري إعادة النظر في وجهة النظر هذه.
وقد حان الوقت حتى يكون لنا دور في كتابة تاريخ بلادنا، كما حان الوقت لإعادة فحص الأدلة على ضوء نتائج الكشوفات الأثرية الحديثة. عندئذ يمكننا استعادة ذاكرتنا المفقودة، والعودة إلى جذورنا الحضارية التي تمتد لخمسة آلاف عام خلال ثلاثة عصور تاريخية مهمة، الفرعونية والقبطية والإسلامية.
ترجع أهمية هذا الكتاب إلى أنه يتحدث عن مرحلة منسية من تاريخ بلادنا، وهي الفترة المتعلقة بالحقبة القبطية من التاريخ المصري.
لهذا فإنني أرجو من قراء هذا الكتاب أن يفهم الجيل الحالي وكذلك الأجيال القادمة تاريخ الأقباط في مصر، وأن يذكرنا هذا الكتاب بالتطورات الهامة في تاريخ بلادنا، وأن يساعد في تغيير الوضع السيء الذي صار قائماً الآن، حيث ظهرت عناصر التفرقة بين أبناء الأمة وصار الأقباط المسيحيون مستبعدين من المناصب الحساسة وكذلك السيادية في الدولة، كما لو كانوا أجانب في وطنهم الأم لدرجة الشعور العام أنه لا يمكن الاطمئنان إلى ولائهم وإخلاصهم لبلادهم. فهذا الكتاب خطورة أولى- أرجو أن تتبعها خطوات- حتى نستعيد الذاكرة الحضارية لشعبنا المصري، وسوف تؤدي بكل تأكيد إلى عودة الوفاق بين أبناء شعبنا، كي نساهم سوياً في بناء غد أفضل لأبنائنا ومستقبلنا.
