هذا الكتاب مساهمة عامة فيما يخص الماركسية وضرورة تجاوزها على أمل أن تفتح الطريق مع غيرها لمسار جديد للحزب الشيوعي ولحركة يسار جديدة ديمقراطية. وهو يتكون من فصلين، الأول عن الضرورة النظرية لتجاوز الماركسية والتي أدت إليها التطورات الهائلة التي حدثت في العلوم الطبيعية والإجتماعية والإنسانية، بحيث صارت الماركسية لا تعبر عن خصائص عصرها في المعرفة والسياسة والإقتصاد والإجتماع، بينما الثاني عن النظرية النقدية بوصفها استجابة لهذه الضرورة وللحاجة إلى نظرية للتحرر تحمل طابعاً عصرياً في التعدد والاختلاف. لقد استقر رأيي، أن السبب الرئيسي لركود حياتنا وأزمتنا السياسية والثقافية والفكرية والإجتماعية والإقتصادية، هو جمود مفاهيمنا النظرية التي نعتمدها كأساس لهمنا ولرؤيتنا للعالم الذي نعيش فيه، وبالتالي كأساس لما نود أن نقوم به في هذا العالم، ويتساوى في ذلك كل أطراف الأزمة، من يريد الحفاظ على الأوضاع القائمة إذ تستوي فيها مصالحه ومن يريد تحويلها وتغييرها، إنها أزمة قوى السيطرة الراهنة كما هي أزمة بدائلها.
