يعالج هذا الكتاب بالعرض والتحليل عدداً من المشكلات والأعراض والأزمات النفسية والاجتماعية التي يعاني منها الأطفال والمراهقون، والتي قد تستمر إلى مراحل الرشد والنضج على اعتبار أن هذه الشخصية الأولى توضع في مرحلة الطفولة الباكرة وأن خبراتها السارة والسالبة تترك بصماتها قوية وراسخة طول حياة الإنسان وخاصة إذا أخذنا بالمنظور السيكولوجي التحليلي المنحدر من رؤى سجمند فرويد مؤسس مدرسة التحليل النفسي.
وإن لم يركز هذا الكتاب على مشكلة التبول اللاإرادي وحدها، إلا أنه يستعرض كثيراً من المشكلات الأخرى التي تعترض مسار نمو الطفل والمراهق وتسبب لها الكثير من الإزعاج والقلق والتوتر والصراع، وتعوق علاقاته الاجتماعية الجيدة مع غيرها من الأطفال والكبار على حدّ سواء ومن ذلك المشكلات التالية: التبول والتبرز اللاإرادي الليلي والنهاري، الذاتوية، التخلف العقلي، التخلف الدراسي، التشرد، الهروب، العناد، السرقة، الكذب، العدوان، إساءة استعمال الأطفال، مصّ الأصابع، قضم الأظافر، الصمم، البكم، الإعاقة الجسمية، الغيرة، النكوص، الحركة الزائدة عن الحدّ، أسلوب الأمهات في تدريب الأطفال على قضاء الحاجة، وخبرات الرضيع الانفعالية.
ويعالج الكتاب قضية بالغة الأهمية، وهي حماية الطفل من التعرض للمشكلات والعقد والصراعات والأمراض والأعراض النفسية وتوفير المعلومات التي تسهم في وعي الآباء والمعلمين والكبار عامةً وترشيد سلوكهم تجاه الطفل وتحقيق التفاعل الإيجابي في عملية التربية النفسية السوية.
