البارانويا أو جنون العظمة والإضطهاد عبارة عن إضطراب وظيفي أي إضطراب يصيب وظائف الأعضاء بينما تكون الأعضاء سليمة من الناحية التشريحية أو البنائية فلا يوجد للإضطراب الوظيفي أسباب أو علل عضوية أي جسمية كوجود خلل في خلايا الدماغ أو وجود إضطراب في إفرازات الغدد أو تعرض المريض للسموم أو إصابته بالأورام أو الجروح؛ الإضطراب الوظيفي أسبابه نفسية وليست عضوية والبارانويا من هذا النوع من الإضطرابات النفسية والعقلية.
والمصاب بالبارانويا يعاني من أعراض كثيرة منها هذاء أو ضلالات الغيرة أي توهم حالة من الغيرة الشديدة، وكذلك يعاني المريض من هذاء أو ضلالات العظمة أي الشعور بأنه شخص عظيم أو الشعور بالإضطهاد والإتهامات التي يتصور أنها توجه إليه Delusions of grandeur or delusions of persecution.
ويبني المريض هذاءاته بالتدريج ومن خبرات متفرقة ثم يجمعها معاً لتكوين هذاء منسقاً ويبدو لصاحبه منطقياً ومؤسساً على حقائق في نظره؛ ويتناول هذا الكتاب المتواضع إضطراب البارانويا وغيره من الإضطرابات العقلية والأعراض التي تناول من تمتع الفرد بالصحة النفسية والعقلية الجيدة والتي تحول بينه وبين التكيف الإجتماعي والمهني والأسري من ذلك الإكتئاب والهوس وبعض الذهانات الأخرى كالفصام وأنواعه المختلفة.
ويستعرض الكتاب دور الهدى الإسلامي المبارك في علاج البارانويا أي جنون العظمة والإضطهاد أو الإتهام، وكذلك دور الهدى الإسلامي في علاج السيكوباتية وهي إضطراب أخلاقي وكذلك دور الهدى الإسلامي في علاج مشاعر الأنانية والطمع والجشع وحب الإستحواذ، ويستعرض الكتاب النظريات التي وضعت لتفسير نشأة الأمراض والإضطرابات النفسية والعقلية والإنحرافات السلوكية.
