لقد وقف الضوء يوماً يناضل وحده لإثبات وجوده، ثم تقاسم العمل الفني مع توأمه الظل، فأبرز الفنان كل المظاهر الناجمة عن سقوط الضوء علي الأشياء، سواء ما ينتج من ظلال، أو لتأكيد المعالم والملامح، ومن المعروف ما يلعبه الفكر والذوق والعلم من دوراً هاماً في مجال تطوير الأساليب الفنية، وابتكار الطرق الجمالية، خاصة وأن أهم عنصرين في اللوحة التشكيلية بعد التكوين، هما الضوء واللون، إذ يلعب بهما الفنان علي صفحة لوحته ليخلق صورة مرئية علي مستوى عال من التناغم، بل ونستطيع أن نقول إنهما موسيقي اللوحة.
لقد عبر الفنانون القدماء بلوحاتهم عما يفكرون فيه، وعما يشعرون به نحو كلا العنصرين، وجاء الفنان الحديث ليتأمل هذه المعالجة، ولكنه لم يقف موقف المندهش لإنجازات الماضي، بل فكر بعقل الدارس الذي استفاد من هذه القوعد، واتخذ من الأساليب القائمة وسيلة لتطوير لوحته بما يتناسب مع فلسفة العصر وعلومه، فأفرزت هذه الدراسة، والهم التأمل باليته ألوان حديثة.
إنها رحلة طويلة تقتضي دراسة لماهية الضوء التشكيلي، وهيئته، ومصادره الطبيعية والصناعية، مع بيان أنواعه ونوعيته وهيئته الفيزيائية والنفسية، ووظائفه سواء بمفرده أو عندما يتزاوج مع الظل، وأثر ذلك في إبراز القيم النفسية والمزاجية، وهدف هذا الكتاب، مساعدة المصممين علي عمل التوازن بين استخدام الضوء واللون كعنصر زخرفي، وعنصر تصميم، حتي يتحقق الانتقال بمهارة بين الطريقتين.
