إن موضوع هذا الكتاب، يدور حول عمارة المسرح، ذلك المكان الذي يتصف بسمات خاصة بهدف رؤية أناس يقدمون ويجسدون أحداثاً ويلقون بعض العبارات والجمل وتسمع ما يلقونه عليك، كل ما تري وما تسمع أعده أناس آخرون، مؤلف، مخرج، مصمم مناظر، مؤلف موسيقي، أي كل ما يجري علي منصته من أعمال، إذ مما لا شك فيه أن هناك تلازم واضح بين الدراما المسرحية والعمارة المسرحية، فلايستطيع المؤلف ولا المخرج تقديم نص مسرحي إلا في مكان، قد يكون هذا المكان بناء معماري لمسرح، أو صالة ذات اربع جدران لا غير، أو حتي مكان مستقطع من حديقة، أو من شارع، أو في مكان أثري، قلعة مثلاً، أو أمام الاهرام و أبو الهول، أو في معبد الكرنك.
إذن، يلتقي في هذا المكان، النص، والمخرج، والممثلون، والمشاهدون، ومصمموا المناظر والإضاءة والصوت، والمكياج والملابس، والفنيون، كل هؤلاء، اجتمعوا بهدف تقديم عرض جيد، درست عناصره بعناية، وعلي ذلك فالكتاب يعالج جانبين:
الاول: تاريخ تطور العمارة المسرحية والمنصة، إذ مر هذا الفراغ بالعديد من التطورات المعمارية،التي واكبت تقدم أفكار الحضارة ومبتكرتها، التي اسهمت ايضا في تزويد هذا الفراغ بكل تقنية حديثة، من اجل تحقيق الكمال الفني، الذي ينشده الفنان والجمهور، والثاني: ويعالج الجانب الدرامي، والعناصر الفنية، التي تقدم علي هذه المنصة.
ونود ان ننبه، ان الكتاب قد اقتصر علي مناقشة المسرح في كل من إنجلترا وفرنسا وإيطاليا في كل القرون السابقة، وقد حرصنا علي تناول بعض عناصر العرض المسرحي، كالملابس والإضاءة والمناظر المسرحية وتطوراتها عبر هذه القرون، إن الهدف الحقيقي أيضاً، أن نضع بين يدي الهواة كتاباً جمع بين دفتيه معظم ما يبحث عنه الهاوى من معلومات مجمعة معاً، فلو أراد الإلمام بها لاحتاج إلي العديد من المراجع والكتب المتفرقة وسوف يحصل علي معلومات متفرقة غير مرتبطة ببعضها، وبذلك نحقق له ما يريد، ونوفر جهده ووقته في البحث.
