المعاهدة هي ميثاقٌ يكون بين إثنين أو جماعتين أو دولتين فأكثر على أمور معينة في السياسة أو التجارة أو غيرهما، وهي في القانون الدولي إتفاق بين دولتين أو أكثر لتنظيم عَلاقات بينهما، والمعاهدة الدولية: هي اتفاقية عالمية صورية وملزمة، قد تشتمل مسائل، منها تنظيم التجارة، أو إقرار السلام، أو تشكيل التحالفات العسكرية أو غير ذلك، ومما لا شك فيه أن هناك معاهدات أثرت بشكل كبير في الأحداث العالمية، وغيرت من شكل خريطة العالم، سواء على المستوى السياسي أو الإقتصادي أو العسكري أو الجغرافي، معاهدات غيرت في تاريخ الأمم وحياة الشعوب.
