في هذا الكتاب يغطي الأستاذ بشير عبد الغني بركات تاريخ مصادر المياه وإستخداماتها في بيت المقدس، ولهذا ضم هذا الكتاب مسحاً شاملاً للبرك والأسبلة والحمامات التي كانت في القدس، وخاصة خلال العهد العثماني، كما ألقى مزيداً من الضوء على أساليب إدارتها وتشغيلها على نحوٍ لم يظهر في مُصنَّفٍ سابق.
لقد أثرى هذا الكتاب معلوماتنا حول بعض الموضوعات فيما يتعلق بمصادر المياه في تلك البقعة المقدسة، مثل قناة السبيل، كما تم توضيح مفهوم البئر والصهريج والجُبّ، من خلال نماذج واقعية، كما تم التعرف على منشآتٍ لم يُكشف عنها من قبل.
سيجد القارئ للكتاب أجوبةً على بعض المسائل التي أشْكَلَتْ على المؤرخين وعلماء الآثار، وكان أهمها حول بركة علاء الدين، ولهذا الغرض رجع المؤلف إلى سجلات محكمة القدس الشرعية، حيث كانت أهمَّ مصدرٍ أوَّليَّ اعتمد عليه في إستقاء بياناتٍ عدة لم يسبق نشرها، كما تشكلت المصنَّفات الغربية التي نُشرت في أواخر العهد العثماني مصدراً مُهمّاً في إعداد غالبية فصول هذا الكتاب، بغض النظر عن أهداف مُصنفيها.
كما اعتمد المؤلف على الوثائق المملوكية وبعض المخطوطات المقدسية، حول ما يتعلق بالمياه في بيت المقدس، هذا بالإضافة إلى ما كتبه الرحالة وحُجاجُ النصارى وعلماء الآثار الغربيون، وتأتي الصور التاريخية التي اعتمد المؤلف على كثيرٍ منها لتلبي الغرض في تفسير بعض المبهمات، وخاصة في أواخر العهد العثماني.
