هذا الكتاب موجه بالدرجة الأولى إلى المهتمين بموضوع التصميم الحضري، ولكل طلبة الدراسات المعمارية، وهو مرجع لكل المختصين الذين سيقع على عاتقهم حماية مدننا وأحيائها من التدهور العمراني خلال العقود القادمة للنمو الحضري المتسرع.
وهو دليل لكل المصممين المؤمنين بمبدأ "أن كل نشاط عمراني يجب أن يحترم البيئة الطبيعية والاجتماعية، أمر يعاني من عواقب تجاهله لها". وبالعودة لمضمون الكتاب نجد أنه جاء متألقاً من خمسة فصول: يتناول الفصل الأول مفهوم ومبادئ التصميم الحضري والجوانب التخطيطية المؤثرة فيه، ومستوياته وخططه.
الفصل الثاني يلقي الضوء على سياسات التصميم الحضري، بما في ذلك سياسات التطوير، سياسات التجديد الحضري وسياسات المدن الجديدة. في حين يركز الفصل الثالث على منهجية الدراسات الميدانية لمشروع التصميم الحضري، ابتداءً من تحديد المشاكل وبرمجة الأهداف والمقاصد، مروراً بهيكلية مراحل جمع المعلومات والتحليلات والاستنتاجات، وصولاً لوضع الأسس العامة للمناهج التصميمية للمحاور الدراسية التي تناولتها الدراسات الميدانية.
أما الفصل الرابع فيبحث في إعداد بدائل مشروع التصميم الحضري، ومنها البدائل التصميمية للنسيج العمراني، تنظيم البيئة الحضرية المحلية بأساليب تقييم البدائل واختيار البديل الأفضل كتصميم نهائي.
ويتناول الفصل الخامس موضوع التنفيذ والمتابعة، حين يتم التركيز على الموارد المتاحة والسياسات التنفيذية وأساليب المتابعة ويقدم الكتاب في خاتمته مجموعة وافية من المصادر والمراجع التي اعتمدت في تأليفه، كما تم الاستعانة بعدد كبير من الأمثلة والمخططات والأشكال في توضيح المضامين التي تم التطرق إليها.
