هذا الكتاب هو أول ترجمة عربية لرحلة شارل هوبير (1837-1884) الاستكشافية الأولى إلى مناطق شمال شبه الجزيرة العربية "الحماد، الشمر، القصيم، الحجاز" وذلك خلال السنوات 1878 حيث عثر على أبرز اكتشاف أثري في المنطقة هو مجر تيماء، وتيماء هي واحة قديمة جداً على بعد مسيرة ستة أيام غربي حائل، شمال جبل غنيم.
نشرت تفاصيل هذه الرحلة التي بدأها هوبير من البصرة في 14 أيار 1878 في نشرة الجمعية الجغرافية الفرنسية سنة 1884، أثر مصرعه بالقرب من بلدة العلا في 29 تموز من العام نفسه على يد دليله ابن شميلان من شيوخ قبيلة هيثم. أعقب هوبير هذه الرحلة برحلة ثانية إلى المنطقة بدأها في حزيران 1833 بهدف تأمين نقل حجر تيماد إلى فرنسا، ولمواصلة أبحاثه الأثرية ووضع خرائط للمنطقة بتكليف من الجمعية الجغرافية الفرنسية، والجمعية الأسيوية ووزارة الإرشاد العام الفرنسية.
خلال الرحلتين أقام هوبير علاقات جيدة مع حاكم المنطقة محمد بن الرشيد وتبادل معه الهدايا والسيوف، وبدوره قام ابن الرشد بتأمين حراس وأدلاء لمساعدة هوبير خلال تجواله.
