يعد القرن الرابع للهجرة (العاشر الميلادي) من أزهى أيام الحضارة العربية، زخراً بالعلماء والأدباء والشعراء الأعلام. ومن أبرز أعلام الأدب في هذا القرن الأديب الموسوعي (الثعالبي). فقد أقبل المتأدبون على آثاره ينهلون من معينها ويتلذذون بطرائفها. ورغم اعتناء الأدباء والمحققين بآثار الثعالبي، فإن بعضها -وهذا الكتاب منه- لم يحظ بالعناية اللازمة.. فقد طبع سنة 1296هـ. طبعة سقيمة مع كتاب يواقيت المواقيت.. وها نحن نعيد إخراج هذا الكتاب إلى النور محققاً مفهرساً! وقد اشتمل على مئة واثنين وستين باباً في مدح كل شيء وذمه، وتزيينه وتهجينه.
