لرواية "درب الآلام" للروائي الروسي الأكثر شهرة ألكسي تولستوي شخصيتان رئيستان –رجل وإمرأة- هما: داريا ديمتيرييغنا وكوزما كوزميتش كانا قد تعارفا قبل بضعة أيام في قطار كا يسير بجدول مواعيد غريب، وخط سير عجيب. ما لبث أن أخرجه "القوازق" البيض عن الخط.
وفي هذه الأثناء تتعرض العربة الأخيرة من القطار لنار رشاشة فيهرب كل من كان فيها هائماً في السهب بعد النهب والتنكيل. يسير الإثنان في الوديان مارين بالقرى التي أثارتها الحرب الأهلية. لا يكادان يلتقيان بالناس، ولا يعرفان أن أحداثاً دموية كانت تجري في تلك الأماكن: كان جيش القوازقي العظيم المؤلف من خمسة وسبعين ألف نفر قد عاد لنحاصرة تسارتيسين بعد إخفاقات آب.
عند ذلك المنعطف التاريخي تدور رحى الرواية لتشهد معاً أحداث الثورة الروسية والحرب الأهلية وصولاً إلى انتصار الإشتراكية.
يبقى أن نشير أن هذا الكتاب هو (المجلد 3) من "درب الآلام" من سلسلة مؤلفات الكاتب الروسي ألكسي تولستوي نقلها إلى العربية غائب طعمة فرمان.
