يُقرأ هذا الكتاب في مجلس عزاء الإمام الحسين بن علي رضي الله عنه في ذكرى استشهاده عليه السلام ليلة العاشر من محرم، وهو ما كان يقرأه المؤلف مجيد الصائغ في مجالس النجف الشرف في كل عام، لذلك اختار نشره في هذا الكتاب كموجز لمقتل الإمام الحسين، فجاء خالياً من التطويل الممل أو الإيجاز المخل، يقدم خلاله صورة صادقة عن ذلك الحدث العظيم، وليبقى ذخراً عند آل محمد صلوات الله عليهم أجمعين، وذكرى صالحة بين المؤمنين لمن ضحى بحياته في سبيل الدين.
جاء الكتاب على شكل مرثيات قالها أصحاب الحسين عليه السلام عقب استشهاده منها ما قالته الرباب وهي ترثي زوجها الحسين عليه السلام، ومنها ما أوصى به الحسين عليه السلام ولده زين العابدين قبل استشهاده، وما صدر عن سكينة إبنة الحسين بعد مقتل والدها، ومنها ما جاء على شكل حوار بين الحسين وأصحابه وما فعل أعداءه به ...
هذا، وقد ألحق الكتاب بقصائد مختارة في ذكرى عاشوراء والقصائد هي: للسيد الشريف الرضي، وللسيد جعفر الحلي، وللسيد رضا الهندي، وملحمة الطف للشيخ حسن الدمستاني البحراني، وللشيخ محمد جواد البلاغي، وللشيخ علي المظفر.
