على أثر تقديم شارل بتلهايم لاستقالته من رئاسة جمعة الصداقة الفرنسي-الصينية، تلقي العديد من الرسائل منها المديد لمواقفه، ومنها المستغرب لقراره. ومن بين هذه الرسائل برزت رسالة واحدة هي التي بعث بها "نيل بورتن" وهو كندي مقيم في بكين لشارل يتلهايم، وفيها عبر "نل بورتن" عن القلق الذي أصابه بعد أن أخبر باستقالة "شارل بتلهايم" وطلب على أثر تلقيه الخبر من "بتلهايم" تحليل العناصر الذين دفعوا به للاستنتاج بأن "الخط الثوري" ينتصر حالياً من الصين، كما وطلب منه الرد على سؤال وجهه له وهو :إن اتهامكم بتبني القيادة الحالية للخط التحريفي ليس مبيناً على أساس صلب، كيف يمكن لذلك أن يحصل؟ كيف يمكن لمثقف ماركسي مرموق تعمق بالمسائل الخاصة بالتحريفية وبإعادة بناء الاشتراكية أن يبتعد هكذا عن الحقيق؟
ولما كان "نيل بورتن" قد تمنى من "شارل بتلهايم" نشر نص رسالته وذلك بعد أن يرد على ما طرحه عليه من أسئلة فقد اعتنى "ِشارل بتلهايم" بنشر الرسالتين الأولى كما أسلفنا هي رسالة "نيل بورتن" والثانية هي رسالة شارل بتلهايم والتي هي عبارة عن رد حلل فيه "شارل بتلهايم" منهجه حول التطورات السياسية التي شهدتها الصين منذ أكتوبر 1976 والظروف المهيئة لها.
المسألة الأولى الواجب بحثها هي العلاقة القائمة بين الوضع الحالي في الصين والثورة الثقافية.
وهنا لا بد من التذكير بأن قيادة الحزب الشيوعي الصيني أعلنت من الآن فصاعداً أن الثورة الثقافية قد انتهت. ويتفق هذا الإعلان بالتأكيد مع الواقع. إذ يكفي ملاحظة التحول الذي يطرأ على علاقة القوى الاجتماعية فيما بينها.
فبتحليل أحداث 1965-19066 نستطيع القول بأن هذا التحول في موازين القوى قد ظهر خلال الأشهر الأولى من عام 1967 واتبع منذ ذلك الحين مرفقاً بحركة مد وجزر. إن إعلام نهاية الثورة الثقافية هو المطاف الأخير لمسار تاريخي استمر سنوات عديدة ولمسار صراع طبقي يتطلب تحليلاً طويلاً...
