الشعر مرآة الواقع والوجود، والقصيدة ما هي إلا تعبير عن رؤية الشاعر لتجاربه الإنسانية، أو لحالة انفعالية يمر بها، أو مر بها غيره، أو عاشها حتى في خياله، وقد كان الشعر العربي يقوم بهذا الدور في التعبير عن الحالة النفسية للشاعر منذ قديم الزمان، ومن هذه الحالات التي يعيشها الإنسان ؛ فقدان الصبر، وكثرة المحن والمصائب، التي لا يملك الشاعر أمامها إلا قصيدته، ليبث من خلالها لوعاته و أحزانه، فيمتطي ظهر الشكوى سبيلا للتعبير عن أحاسيسه ومشاعره تجاه حدث ما، وقد ظهرت الشكوى في الشعر منذ الشعر الجاهلي وحتى الشعر المعاصر، وللشعر في القرنين الثالث والرابع الهجريين مساحة خاصة بظاهرة الشكوى تداولها الشعراء في قصائدهم، فهذا الشعر يسهم في تصوير صادق لنواحي الحياة المختلفة: السياسية، والاجتماعية والاقتصادية، وغيرها، كما أنه يعطي تصورا عن تفكير الناس، وبيان تأثير الظروف والنوازل فيهم، وكيف يعبرون عنها في أبياتهم.
وقد قسم المؤلف الدراسة بناءً على مقتضيات الموضوع إلى ثلاثة أبواب موزعة كالآتي:
خصص الباب الأول لدراسة المضمون دراسة تحليلية من حيث: المفهوم العام للشكوى، وعوامل ظهورها، وأنواعها، أما الباب الثاني فقد تضمن الدراسة التحليلية النقدية لمضمون الشكوى مع ذكر النماذج الداعمة للموضوع، وتضمن الباب الثالث دراسة تحليلية فنية للشكل في شعر الشكوى من؛ ألفاظ، وأساليب، وتصوير، وموسيقى. معتمدا في ذلك على المنهج التحليلي النقدي، مع تسليط الضوء على بعض الجوانب الاجتماعية والتاريخية.
وقد واجهت المؤلف صعوبات في دراسته منها؛ صعوبة العثور على أبيات الشكوى في القصائد المتنوعة الغرض، وكذا صعوبة العثور على بعض الدواوين الشعرية ...
