يمكن النظر إلى النظرية بالمفهوم العام على أنها مجموعة من القواعد والقوانين التي ترتبط بظاهرة ما، بحيث ينتج عن هذه القوانين مجموعة من المفاهيم والإفتراضات والعمليات التي يتصل بعضها ببعض لتؤلف نظرة منظمة ومتكاملة حول هذه الظاهرة ويمكن إن يستخدم في تفسيرها والتنبؤ بها في المواقف المختلفة، فهي تشكل مجموعة من الإفتراضات التي تتألف من البناءات المحددة لتوضيح العلاقات المتداخلة بين العديد من المتغيرات ذات العلاقة بظاهرة معينة سعياً وراء تفسيرها.
إن معظم النظريات تبدو مختلفة فيما بينها، فالإرتباطية والإشتراط الإجرائي والتعلم بالإشارة والنماذج الرياضية والوظيفية، كلها لا تعدو كونها مجرد عينة على تعدد طرق دراسة التعلم، غير إن نظريات لها قاسم مشترك واحد على الأقل من الناحية التاريخية، فهذه النظريات تحاول كلها وبطريقة خاصة الإعلان عن سلسلة من المبادئ التي يتعلم بها الإنسان بشكل عام، ولهذا أنصب التأكيد على الجوانب المشتركة للسلوك الإنساني.
