يوجد العديد من الكتب التي تناولت موضوع الشخصية سواء كانت كتبا في علم النفس بشكل عام، أو في مجالات الصحة النفسية، أو فى التوجيه والإرشاد لنفسي، أو في مجالات الشخصية ذاتها. وعلى الرغم من أهمية تلك الكتب ومدى الجهد الذي بذله مؤلفوها من العلماء الأجلاء، إلا أن المتتبع لها يشعر بنقص في بعض جوانبها هنا أو هناك. وقد دفعني ذلك إلى محاولة تقديم عمل متكامل في هذا المجال يتلافى أوجه النقص الحاصل فكان هذا العمل الذي أقدمه للقارئ العربي ولطلاب علم النفس. ولست مغاليا ما قلت بأن كلا من الطالب والباحث والمدرس سوف يجد فيه بعض ما يبحث عنه.
ولقد شعرت بعد أن فرغت من إعداد هذا المخطوط، أنه على تواضعه يتميز بعدة ميزات أهمها: توجهه لموضوع الشخصية بشكل دون بعثرة الجهد في كثير من المواضيع الفرعية والهامشية، تناوله مجموعة شاملة من نظريات الشخصية التي تمثل مختلف الآراء والاتجاهات في المجال، وتنير الطريق للقارئ للتعرف على وجهات النظر المختلفة، اعتماده على تحليل النظريات وبيان أوجه تطبيقها وتفسير نتائجها على عدد كبير من الدراسات النظرية والتطبيقية والعملية، والممارسات المهنية والتعامل مع الشخصيات السوية وغير السوية في مجال عمل المؤلف، واهتمامه بطرق قياس الشخصية والأساليب المستخدمة في ذلك، والتركيز على بعض الاختبارات شائعة الاستعمال في مجال الشخصية وتحليلها وبيان أهميتها وأساليب استخدامها، مع التعرض لنقاط قوتها وضعفها. ومساعدة القارئ على التمييز بين كثير من المفاهيم المستخدمة في المجال كالسمات والأنماط والميول والاتجاهات والقيم، والتعرف على أوجه التشابه والاختلاف بينهما.
