لما اكنت آراء الزجاج المتداولة في كتب النحو ينقصها شئ من الدقة مع حاجة الباحثين إلى توثيقها من كتبه راودتني فكرة استخلاص ما تحدث عنه الزجاج من أحكام النحو وقواعد في كتابيه المذكورين، وتقسيم ما ورد من ذلك في فصول نحوية مرتبة بحسب الترتيب المشهور بين النحويين في هذا العصر، وهو ترتيب ألفية ابن مالك وشروحها، فجاءت هذه القواعد والتوجيهات في اثنين وأربعين فصلا تبدأ بفصل الكلام وما يتألف منه، وتنتهي بفصل كنايات العدد، وذلك يسهل للباحثين معرفة رأية ومذهبة في كل مسألة بالرجوع إلى الفصل الذى تورد فيه.
