نالت ألفية ابن مالك شهرة واسعة, قديماً وحديثاً, في بلاد الشام ومصر والأندلس. فما كاد ناظمها ينتهي من نظمها ويأخذ في تدريسها حتى أقبل عليها الناس عالمهم ومتعلمهم, وما ذاك غلا لسهولة نظمها ووضوح عباراتها من جهة أخرى, ولأنها مختصر الشافية الكافية من جهة ثالثة, وأخيراً لأنها فاقت ألفية ابن المعطي. وأول من شرح الألفية ابن مالك نفسه, ثم ابنه بدر الدين. ثم كثر شراحها. وجاء بعض تلك الشروح موجزاً أو مختصراً, وبعضها موسعاً, وبعضهم جمع عدة شروح في شرح واحد. وتتألف الألفية في النحو والصرف من الكلام وما يتألف منه إلى حذف فاء الأمر والمضارع.
وما بين يديما الآن هو طبعة منقحة ومشكلة من متن ألفية ابن مالك، كما و في الطبعة مقدمة اهتمت بالتعريف بابن مالك اسمه ونسبه، مولده، شيوخه، علومه، تلاميذه، تدريسه، صفاته ومناقبه، مذهبه في النحو، كتبه، وفاته.
