تمثل "دواوين الحماسة" قطاعاً محورياً في تاريخ الأدب العربي القديم/ افتتحه وأسس له أبو تمام حبيب بن أوس الطائي (ت 231هـ) في الربع الأول من القرن الثالث للهجرة، وامتدت مؤلفاته عبر مؤلفاته عبر القرون التالية لأبي تمام، حتى أصبحت كثيرة العدد، منها ما هو معروف، ومنها ما هو مجهول، وهي دواوين تحتو يعلى مختارات شعرية مصنفة ومبوبة، من مختلف العصور والموضوعات والشعراء، يشتمل ما وصنا منها على ستة وعشرين ألف بيت من الشعر العربي، فلا يوازيها في ذلك مصدر آخر من مصادر الأدب العربي. فضلاً عن شروح الحماسة، والتي ارتكزت جميعاُ على حماية أبي تمام الذي تمتع، وتمتعت حماسته معه، بشهرة واسعة، لم يحظها شاعر أو كتاب مثلما حظيا بها. إن هذه الدراسة تحقق مقاربة تاريخية لدواوين الحماسة، في محاولة للتوصل إلى حقائق مجهولة. ومن ثم إضافة معلومات جديدة حولها، مثل تصحيح ما ظنه محققو حماسة البحترى بأنه نقص فيها، وسقوط أوراق من أصلها، والشك حول نسبتها إليه، وذكر شراح جدد لحماسة أبي تمام، والتفتيش عن حماسات مجهولة، وتأكيد رواية أبي تمام لحماسته، بعد ما قيل بأنه لم يروها، وإنما وجدت مخطوطة بيده، وبعد موته بأعوام. وقد اعتمد الباحث (والشاعر) عبد البديع عراق على عدد من المخطوطات التي لم تظهر للنور بعد، لاستقصاء حقائق وجود دواوين الحماسة في التراث العربي، فضلاً عن قراءته لمختلف الآراء والأخبار والشروح، والدراسات المتأخرة والمتقدمة، التي انصبت على دواوين الحماسة وأصحابها وشعراءها وشاعراتها وموضوعاتها وأزماتها... الخ.
