لقد حاولت في هذا الكتاب أن أجمع مجموعة من القصص مثلت على مسرح الحياة، شاءت المقادير أن أخرج من صفوف المتفرجين في ذلك المسرح، لكي أقف على خشبته وأمثل الأدوار التي تم سردها في هذه القصص الحقيقية، التي ليس فيها إضافات من بنات الخيال ولا حتى تلاعب في الواقع، وضعتها بأسلوب لم أسمح فيه لقواعد الكتابة القصصية أن تغير من واقعها ولا للحقائق التاريخية والأحداث أن تشوه شكلها...
فهذه الأوراق التي كتبتها ليست مجموعة قصصية بالمعنى الدقيق وليست مذكرات كالتي يكتبها الدبلوماسيون عن حياتهم ومشاهداتهم بل هي وقائع صادفتها في حياتي وبحكم مهنتي الدبلوماسية الطويلة، فحياة الدبلوماسي ليست لهواً وإنما هي حياة لها مشاكلها ومآسيها ومأزقها مثلما لها حسناتها وامتيازاتها. فالدبلوماسي هو إنسان له غرائزه الطبيعية، فيه الضعف والقوة وفيه الشجاعة والجبن والنزاهة والفساد، فهذا يلتزم بقواعد المهنة الأخلاقية قلا يحيد عنها وآخر من لا يتورع عن استغلال مهنته أبشع استغلال، مشوهاً سمعته الشخصية وسمعة بلاده... والآن وبعد انقضاء أكثر من أربعة عقود على دخولي السلك الدبلوماسي وتدرجي في الدرجات الوظيفية في وزارة الخارجية حتى نلت درجة سفير وما زلت.
