هذه قصة ضابط عراقي من أسرة بغدادية أصيلة ونبيلة، تتميز بالنقاء والعفة والنزاهة، يرويها ببساطة وصدق للآخرين من العراقيين والناطقين باللغة العربية، ولقادة القوات المسلحة العراقية في المستقبل.
وبالإضافة إلى كون اللواء الركن محمود شكر شاهين من أقاربي، فإنني تعرفت عليه عن كثب عندما كان تلميذاً في الكلية العسكرية، وكنت أحد أعضاء الهيئة التدريسية في الكلية أدرس مادة التعبئة والتنظيم، ومن بعدها زادت معرفتي به عندما عمل بمنصب أمر كتيبة دبابات اليرموك اللواء المدرع السادس عندما كنت قائداً للفرقة المدرعة الثالثة، وعندما أصبحت قائداً للفرقة المدرعة العاشرة، اشتغل بمعيتي كآمر لكتيبة دبابات حماد، التي كانت حقاً من خبرة كتائب الفرقة، وبعدها أصبح آمراً للواء المشاة الآلي 24 التابع للفرقة العاشرة المدرعة أيضاً.
وخلال الحرب العراقية - الإيرانية عمل اللواء الركن محمود شكر شاهين بمنصب آمر اللواء المدرع العاشر وهو إحتياط الفيلق الثالث الذي كنت قائداً له، وقد شاهدته في موقف عصيب ليلة الهجوم الإيراني على قاطع الفرقة المدرعة التاسعة بتاريخ 5/ 1/ 1981، عندما استدعيته وكلفته بواجب الهجوم المقابل على قوات العدو.
وعندما أطل علينا ليلة 5/ 6 ك الثاني 1981 كان متفائلاً ومليئاً بالثقة على الرغم من الموقف العصيب الذي كنا فيه وقلت له ساعتها لقد ادخرتك يا عقيد ركن محمود ليوم أسود وعصيب ولا أعتقد أن هناك يوماً أصعب من هذا اليوم الذي نحن فيه، حيث رد على العقيد الركن محمود قائلاً أبشر سيدي ستأتيك الأخبار السارة صباحاً وسترى ماذا سيفعل أبطال العراق بهم، وكان عمله متطابقاً مع قوله مما جعلني أطلق عليه وعلى رتله اسم (رتل القعقاع)، تيمناً بالقائد العربي القعقاع بن عمرو التميمي.
