كتاب "رسالة في الخط وبري القلم لابن الصائغ" هو من الكتب العربية التي عرضت تاريخ الخط العربي وتناولت أعلامه وعالجت تقنيته. ولموضوع هذا الكتاب ومعالجته طبيعة متميزة وهي انه كتاب فني بكل ما يحمله هذا الوصف اليوم من معنى. فهو ليس كتاباً تاريخياً أو أدبياً أو لغوياً، بل هو كتاب يجمع بين التاريخ الفني للخط العربي أعلاماً وأقلاماً وأدوات، وبين النظرية والتطبيق تعريفاً بأهم أقلامه وشرحاً لسماتها الخاصة وأصول كتابتها وتقنياتها.
لذلك كان لا بد أن لا تقف غاية المحقق عند حد النشر العلمي لنصّ كتاب مخطوط والتعريف به وبمؤلفه وتحقيقه، بل هي تجاوزت ذلك إلى غاية تتوخى جعله في متناول المعنيين بالفنون العربية، وبالتحديد الفنون التشكيلية، وعلى الخصوص فن الخط، من مؤرخين وباحثين ونقاد وفنانين تشكيليين وخطاطين لا على سبيل التثقيف النظري فحسب، بل أيضاً على سبيل التوجيه للتطبيق العملي وذلك لما يحويه هذا الكتاب من مادة تقنية مفيدة. وعلى هذا فقد سلك المحقق منهجية خاصة في التحقيق يطلق عليها اسم منهجية التحقيق الفني وذلك انطلاقاً من طبيعة الكتاب المتميزة، وهذه المنهجية لا تقف عن اعتماد الكلام، بل تتجاوزه إلى اعتماد الصور والرسوم أيضاً في التوضيح والشرح والمقارنة والتعليق على النص. لذلك قام المحقق بنشر النص مصححاً كاملاً بدون نواقص أو أخطاء، مثبتاً في مواضعها من النص في الهوامش المقابلة له نماذج الخطوط والتصاميم الملازمة لنص الكتاب على سبيل الشرح والإيضاح أو التطبيق باعتبارها مكملة للنص وجزء لا يتجزأ منه، مع التمييز بين النماذج المستلة من المخطوطات الثلاثة وبين المأخوذة من مصادر أو مراجع أخرى، باعتبارها ليست من مادة الكتاب الأصلية.
