يحاول هذا الكتاب فض حالة الرهبة- التى قد تصل إلى حد القداسة- لعدد من المعتقدات الخرافية الموروثة من عصور موغلة فى القدم. والتى لا تكتسب قوتها وذيوعها إلا من خلال التقادم والتوارث دونما سند من منطق، ولهذا يعتمد المؤلف فى تفسير عناصر ظاهرة الموت على البحث عن المنطق الذى أنتجها، والذى يحيط بنشأتها ويتيح لها الاستمرارية عبر الزمان، وهو بهذا يترجم إلى لغة المنطق ما لم يوضع على أساس منطقى أصلا، ويتتبع مراحل هذه الظاهرة الفلكلورية بصورة كلية، دون فصم لأى عنصر من عناصرها، والنظر إليه بمعزل عن السياق المنتج له، فيبدأ بالإشارة إلى المعتقدات، ثم يعرض "الممارسات والعادات" الناتجة عنها، وينتهى بالتدليل على ذيوع هذه المعتقدات فى "الإبداع" الشعبى المتداول فى الإقاليم المصرية المختلفة.
