تعد هذه الرسالة من أقدم ما صنف في افتتاحيات الكتب، إن لم تكن أقدمها، وكتب الافتتاحيات مصنفات يضعها العالم أو يمليها برسم الشروع في إقراء كتاب من الكتب أن تدريسه، ويتناول فيها ترجمة صاحب الكتاب المراد إقراؤه، ويتحدث عن خصائص كتابه، ومنهجه فيه، كما أنه يسوق أسانيده إليه، ويعرض ما قيل في الثناء عليه نثراً ونظماً.
وقد أبان الحافظ السلفي في هذه الرسالة عن نشاطه العلمي بالمدرسة العادلية -التي تسمت فيها بعد باسمه- وتحدث عن مجالسه العلمية، وعزمه على إملاء كتاب الموطأ للإمام مالك رحمه الله، ثم العدول عنه إلى كتاب الاستذكار، وفي غضون ذلك أشاد بالإمام مالك وبكتاب الموطأ، وذكر نبذاً من ثناء العلماء عليه، ثم ترجم للحافظ ابن عبد البر ترجمة مستفيضة أكثر فيها من الثناء عليه وعلى تصانيفه، وتفرد فيها بذكر بعض الأقوال في ولادته ووفاته، وختم الكتاب بذكر بعض أشعاره في الثناء على تآليفه، وبخاصة كتاب الاستذكار الذي عزم على إملائه وتدريسه لطلابه.
ولهذا كانت هذه الرسالة شهادة من الحافظ السلفي بجلالة ابن عبد البر، وعلو كعبه، وسعة علومه، وشهادة منه أيضاً لكتابه الاستذكار بعدم وجود نظير له في بابه، فهو من أجل كتب الحديث والفقه، علاوة على ما حوته -رغم وجازتها- من فوائد فريدة، ومعلومات عزيزة.
وقد اعتمد في تحقيقها على نسختين خطيتين، واجتهد في ضبط نصها، وتوثيق نقولها، والتعليق عليها، وصدرت بدراسة موجزة عرفت بالمؤلف تعريفاً موجزاً، ووضحت ما يتعلق بإثبات عنوانها، وصحة نسبتها إلى مصنفها، مع وصف النسختين المعتمدتين في التحقيق، كما تحدثت عن موضوع الكتاب، وعناية العلماء بكتاب الاستذكار.
