وُلِد الميرزا محمّد حسين النائيني في أسرة تتمتّع بوجاهةٍ إجتماعيّة، ما ساعده على الدخول في أوساط العائلات الإقطاعيّة المرتبطة بالنظام الملكيّ الذي كان قائماً في تلك الأيام في إيران، فعندما غادر مسقط رأسه بادئاً رحلته العلميّة، في أصفهان المدينة العلميّة في ذلك الوقت، عاش في كنف إحدى عائلاتها الدينيّة الإقطاعيّة، ودرس على أيدي علمائها، ثم عندما انتقل إلى النجف كان مقرباً بل كان ينظر إليه على أنّه السكرتير الخاص للأخواند الخراساني وكانت رسائله وبياناته، ومن ردّة فعلٍ سلبية على إستبداد تلك العائلة التي ارتبط بها في أصفهان، ومن التأثر الإيجابي بأستاذه النجفيّ الآخوند الخراسانيّ، تحول النائيني إلى داعيةٍ في مواجهة الإستبداد بأشكالها كلّها لا سيّما السياسيّ منه والديني على وجه التحديد.
والنائيني مضافاً إلى دوره الإجتماعيّ السياسيّ هو فقيه وأصوليّ من الطراز الأول حيث ما زالت أفكاره الأصوليّة مدار أخذ وردّ في الحوزات العلميّة، بل ما زال بعض تلاميذه على قيد الحياة حتى عصرنا هذا، وهذا الكتاب محاولة للبحث في تراث النائيني في كثير من المجالات التي كان له في رأي وموقف.
يميز هذا الكتاب هو معالجته لهذه الشخصية من نواحٍ جديدة ومختلفة عن غيره، فمثلاً يتعرض إلى الجذور الفكرية لكتابات الشيخ النائيني، ونشاطه السياسي، وابتكاراته في علمي الأصول والفقه، مضافاً إلى غيرها من الموضوعات الأخرى المهمة والمتعلقة بهذه الشخصية.
حيث اخترنا مجموعة من الدراسات التي تسلّط الضوء على حياته ومسيرته الفكرية للبحث عن الجذور والمنابت التي استمدّ منها النائيني أفكاره ونظريّاته في الإستبداد والتنظير للسلطة من داخل الفكر السياسي الإسلامي بفرعه الإماميّ.
