تغيرت مسميات الشرطة في أبوظبي وفقاً لمراحل تطورها التاريخي والإداري طوال أكثر من ستة عقود حتى الآن، ومرت قوة شرطة أبوظبي بست تسميات إدارية مختلفة على النحو التالي :
- دائرة الشرطة والأمن العام (1957-1966).
- قيادة الشرطة والأمن العام (1966-1971).
- وزارة الداخلية المحلية – شرطة أبوظبي (1971-1974).
- المديرية العامة للشرطة (1974-1981).
- الإدارة العامة لشرطة أبوظبي (1981-2004)
- القيادة العامة لشرطة أبوظبي (2004-حتى الآن).
