الألفية لابن مالك هي منظومة تعليمية للنحو في حوالي ألف بيت، قلّد فيها ألفية ابن معط، وألفها لابنه محمد الأسد. وقد حظيت الألفية باهتمام العلماء وعنايتهم ما لم يحظ به كتاب آخر، فقد أحى بروكلمان في تاريخ الأدب العربي تسعاً وأربعين كتاباً شرحت فيه الألفية. ولعل أقدم هذه الشروح هو شرح ابن الناظم. وقد لقي هذا الشرح اهتمام العلماء أيضاً، فوضعوا له تعليقات وشروحات. وجاء ابن هشام بعد ابن الناظم، وشرح الألفية في كتابه "التوضيح" ولقي هذا الكتاب من علماء العربية اهتمامً كبيراً فتصدوا لشرحه والتعليق عليه، ولعل من أهم هذه الشروح الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا.
ويتضح ذلك من خلال ما يلي: أنه يضم الفية ابن مالك إلى جانب كتاب أوضح المسالك "التوضيح" لابن هشام، أنه نقل بعض أراء النحويين واللغويين عن كتب مفقودة لم تصل إلينا، أنه يعد متمماً لكتاب أوضح المسالك "التوضيح" فقد ذكر فيه ما أهمله ابن هشام من شرح بعض القضايا النحوية، استطراده الواسع في شرح القضايا النحوية، استطراده في شرح قصة مثل، وقوفه عند آراء الكثير من النحاة، انتصاره لابن مالك على ابنه بدر الدين الذي خالف أباه في بعض المسائل النحوية. تلك الأمور وغيرها جعلت شرح التصريح من الكتب الأكثر تداولاً بين النحاة الذين أخذوا عنه، ووصفوا له شروحاً وحواشي.
