عاشت بغداد مع بداية سنوات الخمسينات من القرن العشرين، طفرة تحديثية مضيئة كثمرة لعائداتها النفطية الوفيرة. وبتحفيز من جيل متميز من المهندسين المعماريين العراقيين الشباب، الذين أعدوا مهنياً في الغرب، شهد العراق بناء مشاريع ضخمة، وتنظيم مسابقات هامة، شارك فيها مهندسون معماريون عالميون مثل جيو بونتي، وفيرنر مارش، ووالتر غروبيوس، وألفار ألتو، وفرانك لويد رايت، ومارينوس دودك وآخرون. ضمن هذا السياق، كلف لوكوربوزييه في عام 1956 بتصميم مدينة رياضية أولمبية في بغداد، لكن وحدها الصالة المغلقة التي عمل لوكوربوزييه في تصميمها حتى وفاته أنجزت عام 1980 على يد أحد مساعديه القدامى ووفقا لمخططاتها الأصلية.
لم يحظ البناء المنفذ بعد وفاة مصممه، باهتمام مجتمع المهندسين المعماريين في العالم حتى وقت قريب، على الرغم من احتوائه على عدد من "التواقيع المعمارية" الشهيرة للوكوربوزييه كالسطح المموج، ممر النزهة المعمارية المنحدر، الإنارة السقفية غير المباشرة، "صندوق المعجزات" وغيرها. يهدف هذا الكتاب كشف النقاب عن تفاصيل مثيرة لمشروع الصالة الرياضية المغلقة في بغداد، معتمدا على مجموعة من الصور والوثائق القديمة والحديثة غير المنشورة سابقا، مظهرا تجسيد البناء البيتوني الضخم وظيفته بالرغم من كل الظروف والمصاعب كرمز لثنائية الشباب والحداثة في بغداد.
