(الآخر)، بشراً وموضوعاً، هو اليوم شاغل الدنيا، وإحدى موضوعات العصر على الصعد السياسيّة والفكريّة والإجتماعيّة والثقافية، وحين يرد ذكر الآخر هذا، فغالباً ما يحضر في أذهاننا الغربيّ تحديداً، ولكنّه قد يعني غير العربيّ وأحياناً غير المسلم أو غير الشرقيّ، بل يكون صحيحاً أن يعني بالطبع كلّ من هم غيرنا.
وكان طبيعياً أن يحضر هذا الآخر، ولا سيما الغربيّ، في الثقافة بفنونها وآدابها، ومنها الشعر العربيّ الحديث، تبعاً لشيوع ما يمكن تسميته بثنائيَّة الشرق والغرب الّتي ظهرت في أعقاب اللقاء الحضاريّ الكبير بينهما في القرن التاسع عشر، والّذي تواصل بعده بشكل أكبر، فقد كان لا بدّ أن يكون من نتائج هذا اللقاء بين الإثنين على أرض الواقع، وإنطلاقاً من تجربة كلّ منهما مع الآخر ونظرته إليه، أن تتبلور صور كلّ منهما في وعي الآخر وما تفرضه تلك الصور أو ترتبط به من مواقف يتخذها كل منهما تجاه الآخر وأساليب التعامل معه، ليكون للخطاب الثقافيّ والأدبيّ، في النتيجة، ما يقوله فيها.
وفي ظلّ هذا الواقع، تتناول هذه الدراسة حضور الآخر، الغربيّ وغيره، في الشعر العربيّ الحديث في القرن العشرين، وإذا كان ممكناً تقسيم شعر هذه المدّة الطويلة، في موضع حضور الآخر الذي يتأثر بالمرحلة والحدث التاريخيّ وتطوّر علاقة العرب والمنطقة به، إلى ثلاث مراحل فرعيّة رئيسة يتميّز هذا الحضور في كلّ منها عنه في الأخريين، فإنّ مؤلّف الدراسة لم يشأ اللجوء إلى هذا التقسيم إنطلاقاً من أن المشترك بين هذه المراحل هو أكثر من أن يجعل الجمع بينها متعارضاً مع المنهجيّة.
