أقرّ فرنان بروديل بأن الحضارة الإسلامية هي واحدة من كبرى الحضارات المتوسطية، إلا أنه اعتبر دورها ثانوياً في القرون التي شهدت تنامي التبادل التجاري في حوض المتوسط، وقد جاراه في هذا الرأي كل المؤرّخين الذين تناولوا البحر المتوسط في العصور الوسطى، وعدّوا البحّارة المسلمين بشكل عام مجرّد قراصنة.
هذا الكتاب يتبنى قراءة تاريخية مغايرة كلّيّاً للفضاء المتوسطي، إستناداً إلى النتاج الغزير المكتوب الذي تركه العرب في تلك العصور، والتوثيق الأثري الذي يشهد إزدهاراً كبيراً، وهذا ما يسمح بإعادة تقييم الدور الذي لعبه المسلمون في تاريخ المتوسط، حيث نجد مواقع كثيرة لا تزال تحمل بصمتهم.
ومن هنا يتبيّن لنا، وبعكس ما هو سائد، أن الخلفاء والعلماء لم يهلموا الفضاء البحري، فبينما كان البحّارة والمحاربون والتجّار يجوبون المتوسط، كان الجغرافيون وواضعو الخرائط والعلماء في مختلف الميادين يتركون آثاراً عديدة في توصيفه.
وبما أن المتوسط كان فضاء للجهاد بالنسبة للخلفاء، فقد بقي محطّ إهتمام الإسلام في العصور الوسطى.
