وهذا الفن (دراسة الأسانيد) مبني على أسس مستقاة من شروط الحديث الصحيح الخمسة المعروفة وهي: (عدالة الراوي، وضبطه، وإتصال السند، والسلامة من الشذوذ والسلامة من العلة)، ويمكن إجمال هذه الأسس في مراحل ثلاث: المرحلة الأولى: التحقق من العدالة والضبط، المرحلة الثانية: التحقق من إتصال السند، المرحلة الثالثة: التحقق من سلامته من الشذوذ والعلة.
