كن سبب اختياري لهذا الموضوع نابعًا من أهميته ليس فقط لتاريخ العراق القديم وإنما لتاريخ جزء كبير من مناطق الشرق الأدنى القديم؛ ذلك لأنه خلال عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية (911- 612ق.م) تكونت أكبر وأهم امبراطورية عراقية في تاريخ الشرق الأدنى القديم؛ حيث إن هذه الفترة من عهد أداد نيراري الثاني إلى عهد آشرو أوباليط الثاني تعد إحدى أزهى الفترات وأفضلها على الإطلاق في تاريخ العراق القديم؛ إذ استطاع الآشوريون تكوين امبراطورية ضخمة يدين لها الجميع بالطاعة واللاء، وتعاظمت قوة الآشوريين السياسية والعسكرية والاقتصادية وازدهرت حضارتهم واتسع نفوذهم؛ حتى شملت حدود امبراطوريتهم معظم أنحاء الشرق الأدنى القديم بما في ذلك مصر في القرن السابع ق.م.
وقد جاءت هذه الدراسة لإبراز التطورات السياسية والعسكرية التي عاشتها منطقة الشرق الأدنى القديم في عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية لتكون مرتبطة بتطورات هذا التاريخ الذي لا يمكن فصله أو عزله عن تاريخها الحديث؛ كما جاءت لتسرد الحقائق التاريخية بحياد موضوعي، ولتؤكد الدور الفعال الذي لعبه الآشوريون في إضفاء صبغة الوحدة السياسية والحضارية لمنطقة الشرق الأدنى وعلاقتهم الوثيقة بحضارة وادي النيل ومنطقة سوريا وشمال شبه الجزيرة العربية.
أما خطة البحث فقد شملت مقدمة، وأربعة فصول هي: [الفص الأول: التوسع الآشوري في عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية الأولى، الفص الثاني: التوسع الآشوري في سوريا في عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية الثاني (745- 612ق.م)، الفص الثالث: التوسع الآشوري في شبه الجزيرة العربية في عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية الثانية (745- 612ق.م)، الفصل الرابع: التوسع الآشوري في مصر في عصر الامبراطورية الآشورية الثانية (745- 612ق.م)]، ثم أخيرًا الخاتمة.
