يهدف هذا الكتاب بالدرجة الأولى إلى إعادة تقييم حياة عدد قليل من الرجال، غيروا تاريخ القرن التاسع عشر باستكشافهم مستودعات البترول في العالم، وأثروا لذلك ثراءً فاحشاً. وقد أصبح لهذه السلعة ضرورة استراتيجية في سياسة القوة، كما لنظام الصواريخ العابرة للقارات أو أسطول الغواصات التي تتحرك بالقوة النووية. ومن وجهة نظر المؤلف لم يعد البترول مجرد المكان الذي تجده فيه بل هو كذلك كيفية المحافظة عليه بالطرق الديبلوماسية. وإن ملوك البترول هم أكثر من مجرد رجال أعمال أو موردين يقتصر دورهم على القيام بالبحث عن سلعة وتسويقها. وهم يبدون في بعض الأحيان كما لو كانوا يشكلون فيما بينهم حكومة غير رسمية.
يلقي المؤلف الضوء على هؤلاء الأشخاص باعتبارهم أفراداً، وجماعات في الحروب الخفية التي تدور تحت السطح، والمؤامرات المستمرة والصراعات الداخلية والسياسية وفي الدراما التاريخية التي تترك أثرها على كل حدث من الأحداث.
أوحت إلى مجموعة من قصاصات الصحف والمجلات ، جمعت خلال عام 1969، أن صناعة الزيت الدولية تجابه متاعب خطيرة مع الجمهورية وأنها هدف للنيران في جبهات مختلفة، تتراوح بين استنكار المحاباة في دفع الضرائب، وبين استنكار الإضرار بالبيئة الطبيعية, وتوحى هذه القصاصات أيضا ، بان هذه الصناعة إن لم تلجأ إلى تغيير وسائلها، التى سينتج عنها التقليل من أرباحها ، فإنه يحسن بها أن تبرر نفسها للناس بوضوح أشمل. إن مؤلفات كثيرة عن هذه الصناعة، قد تم نشرها بتشجيع أو تمويل شركات الزيت. وكما يتوقع الإنسان، كانت نتيجة هذه المؤلفات إدخال السرور على نفوس قرائها. ولكني قمت بإخراج هذا الكتاب بعيدا عن نفوذ هذه الصناعة. وقصدت به أن يكون إعادة للتقييم الواقعي لحياة عدد قليل من الرجال ، غيروا تاريخ القرن الماضي، أثناء قيامهم باستكشاف مستودعات الزيت الطبيعية في العالم.
