يخصص هذا الجزء من مقرر بيركلي للفيزياء لفيزياء الكم. ويعتبر تقديماً للطالب الذي تناظر حصيلته في الفيزياء جزأً كبيراً من المادة العلمية التي تحتويها الأجزاء السابقة من سلسلة الكتب. وإذن يكون الدارس المثالي هو طالب علوم أو هندسه في سنته الثانية. ولا يبدو من المعقول أو من العدل تأجيل دراسة كل جوانب الظواهر الكمية إلى ما بعد السنة الثانية في الدراسة، خصوصاً في هذه الأيام وعلى ضوء التطورات التي حدثت في الفيزياء خلال الخمسين عاماً الماضية. أي مقرر جيد التوازن يجب أن يعكس بالتأكيد بعضاً من هذه التطورات.
وهدفي في هذا الكتاب هو تقديم أمثلة مميزة من الظواهر الكمية، لإطلاع القارئ على رتب عظم نمطية لبارمترات فيزيائية في الفيزياء المجهرية، ولتقديمه إلى التفكير الميكانيكي الكمي. لقد حاولت أن أضمن بين مواضيع المناقشة، ظواهر ومواضيع بحثيه ذات أهمية خاصة بالنسة لفهم الفيزياء. وحاولت في نفس الوقت بأن أبقي المناقشة في صورة أولية بقدر الإمكان. ولقد انتقيت موضوعاتي من مجالات متعددة للفيزياء المجهرية ولكني لم أحاول أن أقدم تقريراً منهجياً مفصلاً لكل هذه المجالات. وفي رأيي أنه يجب أن نترك مثل هذه التقارير إلى مقررات على مستوى السنتين الثالثة والرابعة من مرحلة البكالوريوس.
