محمد عبده (1849م - 1905م) عالم دين و فقيه و مجدد إسلامي مصري ، يعد أحد رموز التجديد في الفقه الإسلامي و من دعاة النهضة والإصلاح في العالم العربي والإسلامي ، ساهم بعد التقائه بأستاذه جمال الدين الأفغاني في إنشاء حركة فكرية تجديدية إسلامية في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبدايات القرن العشرين تهدف إلى القضاء على الجمود الفكري والحضاري و إعادة إحياء الأمة الإسلامية لتواكب متطلبات العصر.
يُعدّ "الإمام محمد عبده" واحدًا من أبرز المجددين في الفقه الإسلامي في العصر الحديث، وأحد دعاة الإصلاح وأعلام النهضة العربية الإسلامية الحديثة؛ فقد ساهم بعلمه ووعيه واجتهاده في تحرير العقل العربي من الجمود الذي أصابه لعدة قرون، كما شارك في إيقاظ وعي الأمة نحو التحرر، وبعث الوطنية، وإحياء الاجتهاد الفقهي لمواكبة التطورات السريعة في العلم، ومسايرة حركة المجتمع وتطوره في مختلف النواحي السياسية والاقتصادية والثقافية.
وقد تأثر به العديد من رواد النهضة مثل عبد الحميد بن باديس ورشيد رضا وعبدالرحمن الكواكبي.

إن المرء ليحار حقاً من أين يبدأ وكيف... ماذا يقول... وأي كلمات سيخط لتكون في مستوى التعبير عن كتاب عظيم كنهج البلاغة.
نعم... فأي كلام وإن رقا أدباً... أو سما بلاغة وحسناً سيخبو وهجه أمام إشراقة كلمات نهج البلاغة وتعابيره... ذلك الكتاب المتضمّن لخطب وحِكم، وكتب سيّد البلاغة ورائدها بعد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عليّ بن أبي طالب عليه السلام.
إذن هو نهج البلاغة أسمى من أن يعرَّف... وأرفع من أن يقدّم له... بل نحن من يسمو به، ويرتقي بعلومه ومبادئه، وحكمه.
ولأنه "نهج البلاغة"، فهو يفرض علينا أن نوليه كل الرعاية والإهتمام فنّاً ومراجعة وتدقيقاً، لذلك بذلنا عليه الجهد الجهيد مصحوباً بالنفس الطويل... فهو أولاً قد قورن بنسخ أُخرى بطبعات مختلفة قديمة وحديثة...
وبنتيجة ذلك جرى إتمام النقص الموجود في بعض الخطب والحكم والكتب والهوامش، وتصحيح الكثير من الكلمات الخطأ، ربما نتيجة سوء الطباعة، أو سوء التصحيح والتدقيق، بحيث نستطيع القول إن هذه الطبعة ستغدو المرجع والأساس لكل عالم، وباحث، وطالب بلاغة.
وهو ثانياً وقد روعي بطبعة النواحي الفنيّة والجمالية، حيث آثرنا أن تخرج هذه الطبعة بحلّة تشبهه غاية في الروعة والجمال.
