لقد افتتح المؤلف روايته بهذه الجمل الرائعة يصف فيها حالة الشخص الذي يمثل هذه الرواية, فهو يقول: عادة لا يهتم الأستاذ فؤاد خشاب بالسياسة, حتى إنه لا يهتم بشيء إطلاقاً, حتى نفسه ينساها أياماً وأسابيع, إلى أن يقيض الله له من ينبهه إلى ذلك, فيعود إلى بهجته بعد أن يصلح ما أفسدته الأيام من شكله الخارجي. أقبل على الخمسين سنة بكل شجاعة, وبقي واقفاً كرمح مغروز في أرض يابسة.. هل أتعبته الحياة؟ إطلاقاً, هو الذي أتعبها, هل هزمه الزمن؟ أبداً, هو الذي هزمه وجعله يخلع نعليه, كلما أراد الوقوف في حضرته, وفي أثناء استراحاته يمرر نفسه عبر الحديقة العامة الواسعة, يجلس على كرسي معين, يفتح ذراعيه على مسنده, ويلف ساقاً على ساق, يهز قدمه قليلاً, ثم يبتسم لهذا الخضار الذي يفرش نفسه أمام بصره, بعد ذلك يغذي خياله بالألوان المحيطة به. وقد يراقب تقافز العصافير حوله, وأمامه, يضرب بفرشاة ألوانه عدة ضربات على زرقة الماء وهي تعكس ألوان الشجر, يتابع صعوداً إلى أن يصل إلى القمم, يتنسم رائحتها وهي تثقب زرقة السماء بهذا الخضار الذي يفتح شهوة الروح, يغمض عينيه, ولا يحلم, فقط يكرر المشهد عدة مرات لتحفظه نفسه.
