والقارئ الذي عاش تجربة الكاتب الحزينة مع ميلاد ابنة المعاق في "هموم شخصية" سوف يجد رواية أخرى بالغة الخصوصية، تحتاج إلى جهد خاص في القراءة، والتعرف على وقائع الحياة التي عاشها كاتب ياباني في الريف، تمتزج لديه التواريخ، والشخصيات ولا يستطيع الانسجام بسهولة مع الآخرين، وهو يستقبل آخاه العائد من رحلة طويلة إلى بلاد مختلفة.
وهنا نجد أنفسنا أمام جزء من سيرة ذاتية للكاتب المولود في 31 يناير عام 1935 في جزيرة شيكوكو الواقعة في الجنوب الغربي من اليابان. فوسط أسرته الصغيرة العدد نسبياً، عاش "اوى" مأساة اليابان، عقب سقوط قنبلتي نجازاكي وهيروشيما في عام 1945، فقد كان في العاشرة من العمر، عندما سقطت، كما كتب، زهرة كريزانتيم ذهبية، فوق 165 كيلومترا مربعا من الأرض. حول هذه الزهرة انطلقت أشعة الموت، وراحت تزرع في قلب الصغير الرغبة في الكتابة، فالقنبلة اقوى من الغابة، ولذا استطاعت تدميرها.
