هذا الكتاب هو محاولة لتوثيق تأريخ المسرح في البصرة من بداياته الأولى حتى عام 1968، حيث أثرى المسرحيون البصريون، المسرح العراقي، بنخبةٍ كبيرةٍ من المبدعين المسرحيين كتّاباً ومخرجين وممثلين، إضافة إلى تميزهم في نوعٍ تشكيلات الفرق المسرحية التي تميزوا بها دون أقرانهم العراقيون.
انجز هذا البحث في أربعة فصول: تضمن الفصل الأول أربعة محاور: تناول المحور الأول دراسة موجزة للموقع الجغرافي والتأريخي الخاص بمدينة البصرة، أما المحور الثاني فقد تقصّى الباحث نشاط المدارس العامة والخاصة في مجال التمثيل منذ عام 1917- 1968، مع دراسة واقع المسيرة التعليمية في العراق وأثرها في البصرة، والتي أدّت بالتالي إلى ظهور بواكير النشاط التمثيلي في المدارس على يد المعلمين والمثقفين.
وفي المحور الثالث تناول الباحث جانباً مهماً من النشاط التمثيلي في البصرة، وهو تشكيل فرق مسرحية داخل الأندية الرياضية والإجتماعية، فضلاً عن الفرق المسرحية البصُرية التي شكّلت منذ عام 1929- 1968، وتناول المحور الرابع تأثير الفرق المسرحية العراقية والعربية والأجنبية التي زارت البصرة على مجمل النشاط المسرحي فيها.
وفي الفصل الثاني، قام الباحث من خلال رؤية توثيقية إعْتَمَدَت المنهجية التأريخية بجرد وإحصاء وتثبيت معظم العروض المسرحية التي قدّمت في البصرة إبتداء من أول عرض مسرحي مثبَّت عام 1917- حتى نهاية عام 1968.
وفي الفصل الثالث رصد الباحث تجربة العرض المسرحي في البصرة من 1950- 1968 من خلال ثمانية مخرجين بصُريين، أثروا الحركة المسرحية في البصرة بنتاجاتهم المسرحية، وتضمن الفصل الرابع عرض للإستنتاجات والتوصيات.
