عرفت البشرية النقود كنظام اقتصادي منذ أقدم العصور. فقد ارتبط ظهورها بالمبادلة والحاجة إلى وجود وسيط يسهل عملية التبادل بين السلع والخدمات بعضها ببعض. وتلازم تطور هذا النظام مع تطور النظم الاقتصادية وتغيرت أشكاله وصورة بحسب الظروف الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والسياسية السائدة في كل بلد. بل وأثرت النقود في هذه الظروف بصورة مباشرة وفي بعض الأحيان بصورة غير مباشرة.
فهناك علاقة وثيقة بين النظام الاقتصادي والنظام النقدي، فأي تغير في النظام الاقتصادي لا بد أن يحدث أثراً في النظام النقدي، كما أن أي انحراف في كيفية أداء النظام النقدي لوظيفته لا بد أن يؤثر على حسن أداء النظام الاقتصادي لوظائفه أيضاً، ولا يقل اكتشاف النقود أهمية عن اكتشاف الإنسان للنار والكتابة، فهي من الخطوات الرئيسية في تطور حضارة الإنسان.
وقد مكنه هذا الاكتشاف من ترشيد سلوكه الاقتصادي، فقد كان المبدأ أن يحصل الإنسان على كل ما يريده لإشباع حاجاته دون أي ترشيد أو نظام، إلا أن اكتشاف النقود جعل الإنسان ينظم استهلاكه، فأصبح المبدأ هو أن يحصل الإنسان فقط على ما يستطيع شراره، وتعتبر النقود نظاماً اجتماعياُ، كذلك، إذ أنها ارتبطت بحاجة الأفراد إلى المبادلة مع توسع التخصص وتقسيم العمل والملكية الخاصة، وترتب على ذلك ظهور الفائض الاقتصادي ورغبة الأفراد في مبادلة هذا الفائض للحصول على السلع والخدمات التي تشبع حاجاتهم في مرحلة أولى، ثم للحصول على ربح نقدي كبير في مرحلة تالية.
وتمثل النقود أهمية كبيرة في جميع المعاملات على المستوى الداخلي والخارجي في الوقت الحاضر. بل إن جميع القرارات الاقتصادية بشأن الإنتاج والتوزيع والادخار والاستثمار، وغيرها من القرارات الاقتصادية الهامة ترتبط بصورة وثيقة بالنقود والنظام النقدي لكل دولة، وإن كانت أهميتها تختلف باختلاف النظم الاقتصادية.
وفي إطار الدراسات النقدية تأتي هذه الدراسة التي بين أيدينا والتي هي من تأليف الدكتورة سوزي عدلي ناشر مدرس الاقتصاد والمالية العامة في كلية الحقوق بجامعة بيروت وفيها تتحدث عن نشأة النقود وتطورها، مفهوم النظام النقدي، النقود والتضخم، النظام المعرفي وذلك بأسلوب أكاديمي يصلح للتدريس في الكليات الاقتصادية والتجارية.
