هذا كتاب يدرس القياس في النحو العربي، نشأته وتطوره، ويسهم في خطوط البحث، ويدقق النظر في كتب أصول النحو، ويتكون من مقدمة وتمهيد، وخمسة فصول وخاتمة. ويتناول التمهيد نشأة القياس في النحو، أما الفصل الأول فيعرض للقياس النحوي: تعريفاً وأقساماً وأحكاماً، وتولى الفصل الثاني إيضاح أمر خطير هو القياس بين البصريين والكوفيين وفى تتبع تاريخياً المبادئ التي قام عليها القياس مثل مبدأ: الكثرة والقلة، والخلاف فيهما، والقبائل التي اعتمد عليها من النقل، ويناقش مسألة الاطراد والشذوذ.
وقام الفصل الثالث بتفصيل أدلة القياس المعتمدة في بناء النحو العربي، فعرض للقرآن الكريم، وقراءاته، وبين موقف النحاة بصريين وكوفيين منها، ومدى إفادتهما منهما في تقرير قواعد النحو، ووقف عند الحديث النبوي الشريف، ومواقف النحاة منه، فأوجز القول فيه وخلص إلى نتيجة ومنهج فيه، وبسط القول في الشواهد الشعرية، وشعراء الاستشهاد، والأبيات المجهولة المصنوعة، والمنهج الذي اختطه النحاة في ذلك، ومدى التزامهم فيه، وتناول الشواهد النثرية محدداً المقصود بالنثر.
واختص الفصل الرابع "القياس معيار نقدي في النحو العربي" بعرض وجهات نظر النحاة في الكلام العربي قبولاً، ورداً وجهودهم في هذا المضمار وأنهم قدموا العلم البلاغة جهداً بارزاً لا ينكره وعرض مصطلحاتهم وألفاظهم مناقشاً دلالتها، ومدى دقتها في التعبير في أذهانهم، وبسط الفصل الخامس الجهود الكبيرة التي قام بها العلماء والباحثون تأليفاً وعرضاً ونقداً مع مناقشة آرائهم ونقدها.
