يتناول هذا الكتاب نوعاً سردياً محدداً هو (الرواية القصيرة)، أو (التوفيلا) الذي يقع في منطقة وسطى بين الرواية والقصة القصيرة، بقصد التعريف بهذا النوع وإبرازه وتفريده إلى جانب النوعية المجاورين اللذين حظيا بدراسات نظرية وتطبيقية أسهمت في إيضاح حدودهما، وفي الترويح لهما، وتسهيل التعامل مع نماذجهما. أما النوع الثالث فقد ظل حتى اليوم نوعاً غير معترف به إلا في حدود ضيقة، ولذلك فإنه مجهول عند جمهور القراء والنقاد والكتاب والناشرين، وأما الأعمال العربية التي تنتمي فعلياً لنوع (التوفيلا) فغالباً ما تلحق بالرواية أو بالقصة القصيرة، وقلما تنال تصنيفاً مستقلاً يسمح بقراءتها ضمن نوع سردي ثالث يمتلك عناصر كافية لإثبات هويته وخصوصيته.
يحاول هذا الكتاب أن يتقدم إلى نوع (الرواية القصيرة) بقصد تمييزه وتفريده، وإطالة الوقوف عنده، نظرياً وتطبيقياً، لعل هذه الوقفة تكون بداية أو منطلقاً لدراسات متممة أخرى، تعنى بهذا النوع وتدقق في خصائصه وحدوده، وتقرأ نماذجه ونصوصه، بما يؤدي إلى تحسين ظروف استقباله ونقده، وبما يضمن أن يبرز نوعاً سردياً ثالثاً إلى جانب النوعين المعروفين العريقين: الرواية والقصة القصيرة.
