"...ليست هذه المحاولة لسرد تاريخ، إن هي إلا لمحة نعود بعدها لشوقي إذ بعد شهور طويلة من انقطاع الصلة بيننا لم أره إلا يوم الامتحان. فوجئت به يدخل علينا الخيمة ومعه جمع من زملائه مكبلين بالحديد ومعهم جيش من الحراس ببنادق وكونستبلات. يومها عبر اللجنة وأوراق الأسئلة تبادلنا ابتسامات، راعينا أن تكون خفية، وكأن عيوناً غير مرئية ستلحظها وتسجلها، ألم أقل إننا كنا في فترة إرهاب وماذا يفعل الإرهاب أكثر من أن ينجح في جعل كل منا يتولى إرهاب نفسه بنفسه، فيقوم هو بإسكاتها وإخضاعها للأمر الواقع الرهيب؟؟!
المفاجأة التي لم أكن أتوقعها، كانت إني عرفت حين ظهرت النتيجة أن "شوقي" قد نجح. كيف ذاكر وعلوم الطب تحتاج إلى الخبرة العملية والمران، وكيف أجاب، وكيف نجح، لا أعرف، المهم أنه نجح، ومع هذا ظل مسجوناً لا يفرج عنه ولا يقدم للمحاكمة ولا يواجه بتهمة، أشاء لا تحدث إلا في عصور مظلمة، أو في بلاد، رغم العالم المضيء، لا تزال تحيا في تلك العصور... لم يفرج عنه إلا بعد انقضاء فترة طويلة، ولم أعرف بالخبر إلا حين كنت ماراً بالقسم الذي أعمل به في المستشفى الكبير بعد تخرجي فلمحته جالساً في حجرة الحكيمة وعليه سيماء التردد والحرج وكأنه قادم لزيارة مريض، والمفاجأة الكبرى التي كانت تنتظرني أني عرفت أنه قد عين في نفس المستشفى، بل أكثر من هذا في نفس القيم الذي أعمل فيه.
بين طيات هذا الكتاب سبعة قصص للراوي "يوسف إدريس" هي: العسكري الأسود، السيدة فيينا، الرأس، انتصار الهزيمة، المارد، رجال وثيران، الفصل الأخير.
